Name: JD Schell
Title: Benefits Administrator
Been with LBMC EP: Since June 2014

Background: In the year 2000, JD Schell joined the United States Army at age 18. For the next 11 years, JD would complete two tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan. When he began a family, it became much harder to serve overseas, so JD decided to end his military career. Once settled back home, JD attended several job fairs and was approached by someone at New York Life. JD worked a few jobs before he landed at LBMC Employment Partners, and he’s never looked back. During his time at LBMC EP, JD earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Strayer University, which helped him hone his skills. In addition to  his degree, JD’s time in the military helped him with the daily tasks and regulations in managing benefits. JD explains, “As you move up in the military ranks, there are 10 million different regulations you must learn to be a strong leader, so you had to make time for learning…It’s a choice you had to make.” JD strongly believes in putting forth the extra effort to provide better service for every person he encounters.

Current Role: Working on a team of four, JD builds benefits packages for every individual client, based on their specific needs. These benefits packages, which include medical, dental, vision, and other supplemental products, can enhance work life for employees and even help the client stand out among top candidates. Throughout the year, JD will help with renewals, constantly shopping around to find the best value for his clients. The best thing about his job is that every day varies, as JD says, “Every day, I am able to work with different clients. I enjoy interacting with all types of people and various kinds of businesses.” JD and the benefits team also stay up to date on all current and potential regulations through daily newsletters, annual studies, groups, etc. JD says, “You have to love what you do…If you want to be good at your job, you must put forth extra effort and do your own research to make yourself more knowledgeable.”

Why LBMC EP Stands Out: LBMC EP has worked with benefits for a long time, which helps them to establish a foundation of understanding and trust with many medical, dental, vision, and supplemental product carriers. This is a great value to LBMC EP’s clients, as JD explains, “The longer you’re in this business, the more you have an established relationship with various carriers. We can provide an advantage to our clients because of the relationships we have with carriers.”

In addition to having relationships with carriers, LBMC EP also truly stands out because of their excellent customer service. “Every benefits brokerage will handle your renewal and help with administration,” JD says, “But our team goes above and beyond by completing monthly billing reconciliations and custom reports we create. We want to know our clients’ business…We want to be involved on a daily basis. We want to be a partner.”

Unique Factors of Your Work Environment: JD is thrilled to be working in a positive environment like LBMC EP’s office. He says there are many places that treat employees well, but it’s rare to come across such a well-connected team. “When you go to work every single day, you should enjoy the people you work with,” says JD, “And, the best thing about LBMC EP is the camaraderie — it was the biggest thing I missed about being in the military. It’s like a family here.”

In addition to the employees having such great relationships, JD also mentions how even the leadership team at LBMC EP always show their appreciation to the employees, “From the top down, it’s hands on. Nobody’s above helping out; everybody pitches in…It really starts at the top. Our leadership team makes it not only a better place to work, but a better company for our clients, too.”

Personal: JD married his wife Sandra in 2008. They have two sons, Bryce, 12, and Victor, 5. JD and Sandra’s life revolves around the kids, “We go to the park, attend basketball games, and chase Victor wherever he decides to go at that particular moment.” When he’s not chauffeuring his children around Nashville, JD enjoys live country music, golf, and reading military history books. He recommends Killing the Rising Sun by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard.
