Delivering Top-Quality Steel Solutions with Excellence, Responsibility, and Innovation

The Client

Established in 1960, Cooper Steel is a national leader in structural steel fabrication and erection, continuing its journey to excellence today. Cooper Steel was founded by J. Kenneth Cooper, who began the company by taking small welding jobs in the evenings to supplement his family income. Mr. Cooper still shares ownership of the company today along with his son Gary and grandsons Cory and Jordan. Years later, Cooper Steel has emerged as the leader for steel performance with a team of 150 employees. Cooper Steel’s vision, mission, and values continue to be its guiding principles as a family business that treats its customers as if they are family, too—trustworthy and dependable—or, as they like to call it—Cooper strong. This family feel is what makes Cooper Steel stand apart from other steel companies, as its owners are involved in daily operations and consciously look out for the needs of their employees. While most steel companies either offer fabrication or erection, Cooper Steel is unique because it offers both services to its customers. “A typical day at Cooper Steel involves estimating jobs, managing existing projects, a 50-plus man-powered team running two full-time shifts in the fabrication shop, and a 20-plus crew erecting steel all over the United States,” says Laura Parker, Cooper Steel’s Human Resources Administrator.

The Opportunity

Cooper Steel discovered LBMC Employment Partners during a transfer of ownership. With a need to hire a Nashville-based accounting firm, the relationship was established with LBMC EP as Cooper Steel discovered that LBMC offered much more than accounting services. Cooper Steel has been working with LBMC EP for almost a full year now, and it benefits from several of LBMC EP’s HR services, including the development and updating of its employee handbook, employee trainings, and overall HR advisement. “To be honest, Cooper Steel had never considered seeking outside HR counsel, but with our accelerating growth, we quickly learned that we needed the guidance and expertise that LBMC EP had to offer,” says Parker.

The Solution

When it comes to what makes Cooper Steel’s relationship with LBMC EP so good, Parker says, “Blair Mann and her team have gone above and beyond to meet our expectations. LBMC EP’s expertise has given us confidence in knowing that we are handling HR compliance issues correctly.” Cooper Steel also appreciates the aid that LBMC EP provides to its HR department’s daily operations. For companies on the search for an HR outsourcing partner, Parker affirms, “LBMC EP’s team is knowledgeable and prompt, and we highly recommend them based on our experiences of working together throughout the past year.”
