The Client

Young-Williams Animal Center (YWAC) is the official animal shelter for Knox County and the city of Knoxville, providing care for and reducing the number of homeless animals through their sheltering, adoption, and spay and neuter programs. Beginning as a quasi-government agency in the early 2000s, YWAC never turns away an animal.

On July 1, 2012, YWAC became a 501(c)(3) non-profit after realizing that if they position themselves as a non-profit, it would open more diverse opportunities for the funding of their animals and services to Knox County. As a result of creating a 501(c)(3), YWAC would be responsible for its own payroll and benefit management. Even though their mission of serving the community would remain the same, YWAC wished to evolve the way they handled these processes.

The Opportunity

YWAC only had a few months to transition important internal tasks to a third party before completely separating from Knox County. Jim Patton, Director of Finance, immediately began his search for the right organization to handle payroll, Human Resources (HR), and health insurance. Especially attentive to finding a strong health insurance policy because of its small employee numbers, Jim looked forward to working with a proactive company that thrived on excellent communication. 

The Solution 

After determining their needs, Jim decided to partner with LBMC Employment Partners, as they exemplified professionalism and offered big company advantages for smaller organizations. “Because of our situation, it made going out and getting our own health insurance almost impossible. That was one of the big things that benefited us with LBMC EP — we were included in their larger pool of employees to get on their insurance plan,” Jim said.

In November 2012, YWAC began working with LBMC EP to prep for the PEO services beginning January 1. Ever since, LBMC EP has helped tremendously. “I’m not an HR person, I’m an accountant,” Jim explains, “If I have questions, I know I can ask LBMC EP, and they’ll give me legal advice. This takes a lot of worry off of my shoulders. I don’t have to go out and investigate something that takes up a lot of my time.” LBMC EP and YWAC have grown together as a team, as Jim says: “They don’t just do the minimum. They want to feel part of our organization and want to give us the best they can.”
